We have to plan for next summer, not this summer.
There's no guarantee we make the playoffs next year.
The west was loaded this year, but i think it will be worst next year.
Teams that will win 50+ games easily, assuming no catastrophic injuries.
GSW
OKC
LAC
Memphis (if Gasol stays)
Rockets
Spurs
Portland (who dealt with a good bit of injuries this year but still own 51)
Dallas wins 50 games almost every year
You can easily see 9 teams winning 50 games, assuming relative health, with the Pelicans as one of those 9.

No telling what the Lakers do in free agency, although they are probably waiting for the next year as well.
Utah was very good after the all star break.
Phoenix is hanging in there.

We have to look ahead and plan for the big FA market after next season, and not handcuff ourselves now. There's very little if anything we can do this offseason to become title contenders, but there's things we can do to prevent us from hampering us from becoming one in the future.
next seasons free agency will have a huge impact on who will be the title contenders for years to come.

One option that hasn't been discussed is the Carl Landry option, give Asik 1 year, $12-$15. It might taste bad going down, but it could let you turn 1 year of overpaid Asik into something like Deng and a $5 million rugged big who may not be better than Asik, but costs more like a role player.
