Some of my most memorable garage/estate sale finds:
the Estes rockets I already mentioned - paid $250 - sold $3500
large lot of Mego figures - paid $160, sold for $7000
large lot of train tickets from 1905 to 1932 - paid $0.75, sold for $700
large lot of 3 3/4" GI Joes an Transformers - paid $650, sold for $4000
1953 LSU Final Four program - paid $0.50, sold for $400
rubber ball signed by Pistol Pete and Press - paid $2, sold for $350 (signatures were bad)
I could go on with a list a mile long.
One thing, after 12 years, I still have not broken $1000 on any single item. The closest I have come is from a comic book, paid $5, sold for $800.
