Back in 2000, after a good friend of mine passed, I would go help his parents out with PC and eBay issues since it was beyond them and they made a lot of money before others really started doing it. I remember them selling the glass wire insulators that used to be old electrical poles for some serious coin but it had to have certain numbers on it otherwise it was junk.
They bought books and really studied stuff. Like Antique said, the internet has changed that as it's easy to look stuff up from your phone.
His parents gave me a bunch of rare cards for all the help I gave them including a Pistol Pete rookie in mint condition.
