Did she really just say that BB8 is "operating on his own"?
Earlier in the clip you hear him mention the initial thought to go CG and then instead they went this way and in that comment he mentioned puppeteers, so there is someone directing his movements, just not by being inside or by stick/rod/cabling.
A couple of my thoughts on the trailer, I like how there are apparently a couple of nods to the OT. BB-8 peering around the corner is very reminiscent of Leia peering around at the Stormtroopers onboard Tantive IV. Also, when the Falcon flies down the exhaust port of the crashed ship, it made me think of flying into the Deather Star in ROTJ.
Love the new TIE Fighters. Took me a second to figure out what I was seeing but black spars and white panels as opposed to the old grey spars and black solar panels will look really good on screen.

Yeah he said in during filming there were puppeteers.

She made the distinction on stage that he was operating on his own. It was heavily implied in her tone and wording that he was now operating differently than the movie. Because she mentioned the technology that a certain group of people had created "and now BB8 is operating on his own".
Obviously, she could have meant that they had to use puppeteers in the movie, but now they have computerized commands. I am just stating the picture her words described, which is that BB8 now has some sort of capacity for operating without a controller.
