The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s deputy who was shot multiple times while directing traffic near an elementary school in Paradis has been identified as department veteran Burt Hazeltine.

Sheriff Greg Champagne, speaking outside of University Hospital in New Orleans where Hazeltine is being treated, said the shooter is in custody and was captured by deputies after a short “tussle.” He did not release the perpetrator’s name, but said he is a white male in his late 50s whom investigators believe suffers from “mental issues.” He was in possession of two guns.

Hazeltine, who has been with the department between 12 and 15 years, was in stable, guarded condition, Champagne said. A father of four, Hazeltine was alert this morning and kissed his wife, who is by his side. One of the bullets lodged behind his eye.

This can't be true because all those officers that responded were green lighted to shoot the guy.
