If .35 Whelen is available to use in your area then there is no reason to buy the 45-70.

You are getting off topic. The OP is looking at getting a lever action. It's not a "primitive weapon" anyway.

I think one day I would like to get something in .35 cal and the Whelen would definitely be a fine candidate.

It's just that right now I have a want for something in a big bore cartridge rifle, preferably lever.

Except for the 50 caliber black powder rifle, everything I have is 30 caliber or less. So right now I'm thinking 45, and then one day I could fill the middle with a 35.
