Those were the two saddest days of my childhood

I can imagine.

My thoughts on "Just Missed" playoff seasons that I experienced:

I took 1988 pretty hard, the Saints were 10-6 but lost out due to tiebreakers.

In 1989, we finished the season strong, beating Buffalo, Philly on Monday night (almost a four hour game, Buddy Ryan refused to shake Jim Mora's hand) and Indianapolis which brought our record to 8-8.

In 1993 we started 5-0 but failed to reach the playoffs.

In 1998 we were 6-8 but if we won out, the black and gold would have made the playoffs. Instead the Saints lost a heart breaker in the desert to Arizona and were eliminated.

In 2002, the Saints were 9-4 and dropped the last three and were eliminated (probably the most frustrating season of all).

In 2003, Carney missed the extra point after that miracle touchdown in Jacksonville that should have forced overtime. Saints were eliminated from playoff contention same day.

In 2004, the Saints were 4-8 but won the next four, had a shot the last weekend but lost all the 8-8 tiebreakers (I believe they lost the tiebreakers to Minnesota and STL).

03' definitely sucked but the River City Relay was softened a bit by the fact that we'd have been eliminated regardless if we'd won that game or not.

04' will always stick with me as a bitter end to a season.

After a 4-8 start, the team really seemed to find their form. We won a tough one in Carolina and needed the Jets to beat the Rams in St. Louis to avoid a 3-way tie that would keep us out. (if us, the Vikings and the Rams finished at 8-8, the Vikings and Rams would go as a result of conference record).

Anyway, the Jets had numerous chances to win the game. They drove deep into Rams territory with a chance to win and basically sat on the ball and kicked a chip-shot to force overtime. They then had a shot to win in OT but Doug Brien pushed it and the Rams took the ball and kicked the game winner and went to the post-season.

Then any momentum we had closing 04' was extinguished by the horrible Katrina season.

In the end, missing the playoffs paved the way for ousting Haslett and Brooks and co. and essentially helped open the door for our championship nucleus, but damn I was so playoff starved that 04' hurt like a mother.
