It's due to it being in 60fps. It was a problem on PC too but there are more enemies in Scholar, so your weapon breaks incredibly fast.

I'm trying to coach a friend through it and he can't make it to the cardinal tower bonfire and get the key to the blacksmith because ALL of his weapons break on the way there. It's a nightmare for new players.

I didn't notice that until you mentioned it, but now that I think about the weapons do seem less durable than DS1. I assumed it was part of the game trying to make it more difficult, but it gets to a point where it's not fun difficult but rather just a pain and annoying
