i made a post a month or 2 ago because my lab had a seizure. She has had a few the past couple yrs and almost all have been after given heartworm medication (heartguard). Its time for the pill again and im afraid to give it to her because her last seizue was so bad. She hasnt had another one since the day i gave her the last pill the first of march. So do they have to have this pill? Are there safer alternatives? My vet is telling me it doesnt cause seizures (of course) but doing my research, heartworm meds are just pesticides, and i really believe it could be the cause of seizures, but i also dont want to stop and then her get heartworms and have a horrible death. Any suggestions?

My dog is heart worm positive and the vet is blaming the heartgard as becoming less and less effective

She actually switched us to advantage multi, which is applied to the skin

You may want to try it as an alternative

My dog stays outside, so I think the preventative is necessary

A preventative, particularly in the south, is a very good idea. However, if you don't trust your vet's word I'd go to another. FWIW, there is now a shot that can be given as opposed to the pill. At least heartworms are treatable now as opposed to years past.

Edit: Forgot to add, we switched from heartguard to the shot last year and our female turned up positive for heartworms last month when she was due for next shot. Turns out that there is a window equal to the hearworm gestation period (6 months) that can leave them open to getting them after the first shot. Male tested fine, young female will be switching shortly.

My yellow lab is allergic to the beef flavoring in heartguard. He would not have seizures but he would vomit and have explosive squirts. We discontinued use after our discovery. We us an all in one flea and heartworm pill now.

Get a second opinion, there are all kinds of different meds for HEARTWORM prevention & different vets have different practice procedures.

My dog had a seizure last year immediately after giving dose of Ivomec for heartworms. I let him out of his kennel and he was super excited running laps around the yard. Only seizure ever - just keep him in the kennel after you give it and don't let him run. He should be fine.

Do not stop heartworm medication, especially now that mosquitos are out.

just get some ivomec in liquid form. It's like 15 bucks for a years worth. Just squirt it in their mouth and you'er good to go, no side effects from my experience if done properly.

We use trifexis as well. Dog hates the taste and will only eat them inside of a pill popper treat covered with cheese

If your dog is heart worm negative, go to grecos and get a bottle of heart worm drops. I want to say it is diluted ivermectin. It works well and does NOT cause zieurez.

this is an OB topic and your better than this

seizures should have nothing to do with HW medication and don't let some greedy arse doc put her on phenobarb with,"regular required blood work", too suck you dry

As someone already mentioned: change heartworm preventative! Heartgard can cause seizures in certain breeds and it has been shown that some heartworms have become very resistant to Heartgard (Ivermectin is the drug contained in it). Do Sentinel or maybe Revolution.

Go the nearest feed/tractor supply store and get some Ivomec. Its what farmers use for cattle and pigs. Scale the dosing down based on weight. Used this for years. Simple, cheap, and effective.

You can actually give the heartguard every 45 days if you wanted. Cheapest place is out of Australia and the website is hoofanhound I order all my stuff from there. You don't need a vet's prescription or anything.

My Dogs aren't on a heartworm preventative nor flea meds. They also have neither.

Not to say you should follow my lead, just letting you know from my experience. My oldest is 4 years old, youngest is about 1 1/2. I do spray them down with natural/organic sprays if we're going out into the woods though.
