A trophy wife is a wife who looks great but has no real value, like a trophy. A participation trophy is given to those who participated but didn't win. Combine the two and you get a participation trophy wife.

a trophy is an award for a past accomplishment, and the only reason to keep it out in public is to show off to his friends.
therefore, a trophy wife is the woman for an older man. he keeps her around to brag to his friends
the woman is the equivalent of a designer handbag. not completely worries about the quality or how long it lasts, but she loves the look of jealousy on her girlfriends' fat little faces.
