Common sense. Obviously they are going to talk to the land owners and adjacent land owners.
That's the thing, he is like a 1/132nd owner of the property. Did they talk to all the owners? No they did not.
Seems they only targeted people known to hunt the area... that's profiling. If Obama had a deer stand this kind of stuff wouldn't fly with the Justice Department.

you really think they tapped his phone line over this?

Just a clarification, but you do not have the absolute right to remain silent. You only have the right to remain silent if what you would say would incriminate yourself. This is the reason people can be put in jail (contempt) for not testifying in cases. If you know something and are questioned in a federal case, your better off just being polite and helping them.

I'd be willing to bet they did.
I understand it is messed up for someone to shoot an eagle. I hope they catch the person responsible. I'm just saying after hearing the story first hand a few days before it hit the news gave me an insight into how they were handling the investigation.
Basically, bald eagle gets shot in your vicinity. You are now a suspect for exercising your 2nd amendment rights at some earlier point in time in the general area.

doesn't that just kinda seem like common sense though?
who owns the adjoining property? who regularly hunts in the area? etc just seem like obvious question in cases like these

Maybe they were getting a list of possible people who had been on the property because they might have seen or heard someone shoot. There's no reason to be upset over basic detective work
I'm not understanding why he'd get his panties in a bind over a couple of questions related to possible info about a crime. I mean, if someone killed your family, don't you think the cops would ask your neighbors if they had seen anyone odd around?
I mean, do you want them to just close the case because they didn't find someone standing over the dead bird with a rifle that matched ballistically to the bullet in the bird, and someone else had a video of it?

Here is another tidbit of information.
When the feds got done talking to him they said, "Expect to be seeing us a lot more often".
They told him in cases like this or the killing of black bears, if they don't get any good leads they camp on the area. They'll spend the next year or two looking for trespassers and any game violations they may find to use against someone as a bargaining tool for information about the bird.
Intimidation much?

It's my panties, not his.
I'm just on my anti big brother roll today.

if your buddy was cordial, I can understand being upset if they were dicks and tried to intimidate him

You're acting like the guys who walk around downtown with a barrett 50 and are pissed off when the cops question them.
Do you think the perp is gonna come forward to admit it and give up his freedom, money, and many rights for the rest of his life? That would be more stupid than shooting the damn bird in the first place

No, it just rubbed me the wrong way that they wanted a list of all the hunters. I would think they would ask the landowner if he ever had any trespass issues with people and start there. Not innocent people enjoying their own private property where no crime was committed.
To the person who asked if I would want my neighbors question if my family was murdered. Yes. Do I want them to produce a list of all gun owners in the area and start there? No.

Yeah, and I'm okay with it.

You're right. We should all register our guns with the federal govt. in case someone gets shot near where we live.

Absolutely.
I was just told it was relayed in an intimidating way. Why tell people that? Lay low and catch the guy red handed. Don't alert the perp to your plans.

Maybe somebody will think dropping a dime will be better than the feds breathing down the whole neighborhood's neck for the next year or so. Just an idea, I don't know.

That's a very good point.
I think it was a kid, and if he was with some buddies the secret will get out. Even trespassers know not to randomly shoot eagles.

We had somebody trying to poison coyotes up around our place. Eagle ate the bait and died. They got nailed for that, too.
