re: Paul Mainieri's Answer to This Weekend's Coaching Decision Criticisms

baseball is a fluid game. It's good to have principles, but its impossible to always stick to them in the flow of the game.
the fact that some of the same people that cry when we bunt too much, are the ones crying now when we don't bunt. So what about their principles? It's not always black and white
and I think the notion that he did this because of his ego is laughable.

Then why did he do it?

There is a situation where the data suggests that it is the correct call to sacrifice bunt. It just so happened that situation came up. Our coach didn't bunt, and a double play happened. That legitimate criticism doesn't mean we want him to bunt in the large majority of situations where bunting is stupid. I don't think it is too much to ask that your coach not split 10s in a conference game.

The people that cried about too much bunting are always against bunting? Is that your assumption?
When a coach goes with his gut in a situation that IS black and white like this one was, I think you can attribute it to ego. What else could it be if you know he understands baseball?
I'm not talking generalizations like you are. This was a specific play call.
And look at the 12th Lester. He bunts Chinea with no outs, runners at 1st and 2nd. Same exact situation (except you have to get 2 runs). We get a run. That's not a coincidence.

because he thought Deichman could win the game in that spot.
and even though he hit into a DP, it's an unlikely scenario, being the 3rd fastest player on the team.
meaning he can pull the ball, advance the runner, and be in the same situation pretty much at worst. Or the ball could find its way into the OF and walk off

You can hit an 18 and get a 21, too, that doesn't mean that you should do it.

If that was his thought process the it wasn't ego, he was just plain wrong. You HAVE to bunt there. It's not up for debate.

Ive read this board long enough to know the majority of people critique the result, and not the actual decision.

Well, let's not go crazy. It is debatable. It just doesn't mean he is immune from criticism. The data suggests that a bunt there optimizes your chances to win. It isn't the only decision, but you can't brush off the criticism by saying "well you guys just don't know baseball." Knowing baseball means knowing what the optimal play is there and being held accountable when you choose a different strategy.

I think most are critiquing the decision. That's what I'm doing. I'm not bitching about Sunday, for the most part that was "just baseball." Friday night wasn't. If we had bunted in the 11th and and had nit been able to get it down or we moved the runners and weren't able to get the run in because of a strikeout or a pop up in the infield then that would have been "just baseball." Those things happen, but not attempting to move the runners goes against simple basic baseball strategy.

I agree. Another general statement. Which I've agreed with all of them you've presented. But again, this was different.

at worst in PM's mind is the Deichman makes a single out, and the top of your lineup is due up with a man still in scoring position and 1 out.
in the end it even worked out, Hale hits one thru the hole that should have won the game.
Sure, I think he could have bunted too. I don't think it is 1000% bunt though. Ive seen coaches across all levels make similar calls. But i honestly don't think it was driven by ego.

Win series and games you should win and nobody will ever question you.

Meh. PM addressed (read: avoided) it. We're all beating a dead horse. I'm surprised he said anything at all. I wish he hadn't since all this does is show his arse a little.
Fact is, two freak plays don't happen, and we sweep and are laughing some of this off. Doesn't change the fact that he messed up Friday. Which I can live with if its not a recurring thing.
I promise to you and Astro that this is it for me.

I remember Paul back in SLU days in Hammond. He was a fine fellow. He wouldn't partake with us smoking the Redbud from Columbia
