Portland didn't exist in 1750.

Old port city, they are always grittier, with higher crime rates. shite goes down.
I don't think we have a sailor problem. Even the employed stevedores are not a usual source of crime.
'Sailors' can replace 'Democrats' as the new euphemism around here

Hell .. A quick of the Phoenix crime rates the last 10 years ain't exactly impressive either .,. You aren't exactly on the outskirts of Nirvana either ..

Not the issue. Marseille and Rotterdam are dangerous cities in their respective countries. Old port cities have always been notorious. Add Naples to the list.

That's why I live in Scottsdale
But yeah, the west and central valley area of PHX has some really scary areas. Where I work is one of them.
Also...most anytime I meet someone for the first time and they hear I'm from LA....if they ever visited NO they always bring that up and tell me how much they loved visiting there. Hell I just had that conversation yesterday with a friend of a friend.

So you live in the Mandeville of Phoenix ..
Posted on 3/30/15 at 9:52 pm to TigahRag
Not really
Unless Mandeville has a huge tourism industry like Scottsdale does.

New Orleans isn't even in the top 10 dangerous cities any more.

It's crazy right now man. In the past 2-3 weeks I've been showing my rental properties to people moving here from all over.
4 people from Baton Rouge that are tired of commuting(2 law students, professionals)
Couples from Delaware, NYC, Cali, Houston, (all working professionals)
A few actors just here for a few months
New professors from the East Coast going teach at Tulane and Loyola
New med student and young people that are part of some sort of start up company.
I've never seen anything like it. It's a great feeling meeting all these people flocking down here from all over the country.

you gotta love how people who only visit for short times think they're able to judge a city as livable or not.
Posted on 3/30/15 at 10:00 pm to Lester Earl
Because a city isn't close to any of the type of outdoor activities I enjoy....I can't use that as a reason to not find it a livable city for myself?
Posted on 3/30/15 at 10:01 pm to lsunurse
Nah .. New Orleans does .. Not too many travel agents recommending Scottsdale for that dream vacation .. unless you're over the age of 85 ..
Posted on 3/30/15 at 10:01 pm to tgrbaitn08
It really is a great time..
Lester, sometimes people get where they fit. I doesn't happen often. But, if it does it is good thing.

No doubt. My most favorite time to be in the city is when there is nothing going on at all. I Like it when it's a ghost town. No traffic, no lines, reservations are easy to come by, the quarter is just full of locals.
Don't get me wrong, it's nice seeing the city electric and full of people enjoying the things we take for granted, but theres nothing like a weekend when nothing is going on.

Tourism may not be as big as NO...but it is def a leading industry here. Scottsdale has a ton of 4 star hotels and resorts and Vegas style clubs here....that I promise you more than 85 year olds are going to.
This place has been crazy with tourists of all ages just this past month for Spring Training. Just going to my usual shopping areas in Old Town or out to eat I'm dealing with wayy more traffic than usual cause of all the tourists in town. Same thing for stuff like the Super Bowl. Or when it's Barrett Jackson week here. Or the WM PGA tournament(which is the largest PGA golf tournament in the US by attendance).
