It's a letter earned for participating in a varsity sport for the school. This was an extracurricular program, just like lettering in spanish club.
Overall IDGAS one way or the other..in the grand scheme of life who does or doesn't have a letter is so insignificant it doesn't even register. I'm just playing devils advocate a bit.

So hypothetically, if the captain of the basketball team gives his lettermans jacket to his cheerleader girlfriend because she's cold, or these same whiners going to bitch then?
