Quick background... FIL passed away, MIL finally got her name on the boat/trailer. She gave me the boat. Her residence is MS, I live here. She wants to do an act of donation to me. Can we do that across state lines? Or does anyone know the process?

Yeah.. probably easier to sell it for a dollar. Louisiana considers a sale between private parties (no dealer) as a "casual" purchase and no taxes are due on the value of the boat or amount of sale either. It's a pain in the azz to deal with going to Baton Rouge to Register it though and you have to get your local parish stamps first. Make sure you get the trailer VIN info on the bill of sale too for the Office of Motor Vehicles. I believe you will pay taxes on the sale price or value of the trailer.

Dad passed away in 2009. Mom signed the title to his Chevrolet over to me..had it notarized. I took it to Alabama DMV and had it put in my name (new title issued in Al)...New tags. Voila done.

Pained me a lot to take those Purple Heart La tags off that truck. Dad was so proud of never having to ever pay for tags again. I still have that tag...probably never get rid of it.
