but i think it is safe to assume that parents who are willing to invest thousands of dollars in tournament fees and travel costs year round probably care more about teaching the sport than the 2 month rec league parents?

You would think that abut you are wrong. They just pay to play and fundamentals are not taught. The rec league/ travel ball you played is a completely different from now. I played rec/travel ball too but the advanced players got the fundamentals during travel ball and practice. Now you just play every weekend and thats it.

You know how I know you've never watched a 12 year old AAA or Majors team play baseball?

I think you're confusing Rec teams and Travel teams.

No offense, but you couldn't be more wrong about this. I took my 9 year old son out of rec ball a few years ago to give him a better chance at learning the fundamentals of the game. Rec ball was daddy ball to us. I don't throw money around for him to play tournament ball either. I pay all of $600/year for him to play on his team and that covers the cost of tournament entries and uniforms. We travel from east Texas to east Louisiana.
Just this weekend, my son bunted on base 3 times (one for a double due to a throwing error).
We have friends that had their boys playing rec for the past few years who are just getting to play at the travel ball level at 9 years old and they are having a rough go of it, due to not learning the fundamentals and not having solid competition.
