Dude why do you hate Lafayette so much? It's like some unnecessary hatred for this place.

I don't hate Lafayette at all. I spend some time there on occasion. Was at City Club on Sunday. I'd rather live in Lafayette than a lot of other places, honestly.
I just hate the "UL" arrogance that's displayed. The perceived entitlement to the use of "Louisiana" and "University of Louisiana" when you're only marginally better than most of the other schools in the UL System. UL Lafayette isn't anything all too special. It definitely doesn't offer anything to merit being a flagship or being the crown bearer deserving of University of Louisiana.

Exactly. But, remember the context that when LSU was chartered , Tulane was still called UofL, thus the nomenclature for LSU that endures today.
LSU guys in the legi would probably not name a competing flagship to LSU. They'll probably be content with the franchise remaining on St. Charles Ave. And furthermore, if there is ever reform over the legislative scholarship program they'll probably right size it to what is a much bigger insttitution now. 149 legislative schollies at Tulane was a big deal in the 1880s but it is not now. The legislature holds the charter to Tulane in the state constitution just like LSU's.

Really, the hate is very evident. Especially when he tries to explain it all away, lol.

it really does not matter regional or national. the La. legislature has depicted all the schools in the system as University of Louisiana schools. ULL can not hijack the name and put in all over their sports uniforms

Says who? The sports team can brand it "Louisiana" just that way, which is exactly what we have decided to do. It's no different than Missouri using "Mizzou" or Mississippi/Michigan/Oklahoma State putting only the word "State" on their jerseys.

Sorry, I still get confused at times & call them SLI. Or USL. Or ULLLLL. Or the Bulldogs. Or the Ragin Cajuns. Or the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Wow. You are a very confused dude.

I agree with you smalls....I don't know why so many people.....some even well-meaning Cajun fans....keep limiting this to just athletiics. As you can see by my profile pic, we can, and definetly are, branding ourselves as 'Louisiana' in all areas.
BTW, for those who are not familiar with our campus, that is a picture in front of Martin Hall......the location of our admin staff.

"UL Lafayette attempted to officially become the University of Louisiana in 1984, but this attempt only lasted for a few weeks before being overturned by the state legislature. Officially, only one university has been the University of Louisiana, Tulane University.
In 1847, the state legislature established the University of Louisiana, now Tulane, as a public university. After the Civil War, the University of Louisiana went through a period of financial hardship. Businessman Paul Tulane donated real estate and funding to support the university. He established the Tulane Educational Fund (TEF).
In 1884, the Louisiana State Legislature transferred control of the University of Louisiana to the TEF. This move renamed the school the Tulane University of Louisiana and the university became privatized. Tulane is one of only a few to change from a public state-funded university to a private institution.
This move over 100 years ago has never been altered or changed so ultimately UL Lafayette and ULM should be turning their attention to Tulane, because Tulane is the ‘real’ University of Louisiana."
let the games begin...
Personally, I only do the "University of Louisiana" thing to agitate ULL. They have a tremendous need to somehow distinguish themselves as a force to be reckoned with, apparently something to do with being in LSU's back yard all these years. In reality, they're no different than other second-tier schools (second-tier behind LSU) in the state. The University of Louisiana - Monroe name is fine with me, I have no problem with it but ULL seems to wish to dismiss themselves from Lafayette for some reason.
ULL has never been competition to LSU, isn't now competition to LSU and will never be competition to LSU. As soon as they accept their place in the hierarchy, the happier they will be.
Maybe Tulane will stand up and take what's rightfully theirs....the University of Louisiana name and stop this foolishness, this need for special recognition, from ULL.

it is a lame argument to say ULL is a national school. The legislature in La. states there is no single UL. ULL or ULM could both say they are UL. Smug Lafayette people think they can gunboat the name. Not
Posted on 3/21/15 at 8:51 pm to hill durham
so are you ok with ULM putting Louisiana on their jerseys and calling themselves UL. They have just as much a right to do so as ULL does.
Posted on 3/24/15 at 7:35 pm to hill durham
Ull is just a weak attempt to try to vault themselves above what they really are. They will never be more than ULL just as ULM won't be. The difference is ULM does not attempt to convince themselves as well as the nation into thinking they are The University of Louisiana. Just be ULL and accept your position .

Not sure why you bumped this thread, but the original poster was talking about the U.S. News definition of a national university.
It's not an argument, it's a fact.
