Sit down dinner weddings suck. Nothing more fun than being stuck in an assigned seat for an hour.
So sitting down to eat food is a formality you'd rather not be hassled by? Imo is sure beats walking around with a plate of food in one hand trying to eat and socialize at the same time.
Let's Face it, the reason why people have buffet style service at a wedding is because it's dirt cheap. If they could afford better they would. They're nothing less classy than getting dressed up for an event and carrying your own food to a table like your at a Burger King.
I've been to lots of weddings in more than a dozen states, the nicest ones always have some sort of formal dining as part of the event. Dinner is usually sandwiched in between other less formal parts of the event.

Everyone from wealthy old money New Orleans families on down have had a buffet. Of course we have pretty good food at most reception venues.

Anyone else been to a wedding in South Louisiana in the last 10 years that had a formal sit down dinner in the middle of the reception? That wasn't an intimate event at a restaurant.
