I will just sum up what I think. Gone Girl is a stretch of the imagination. It's a movie that was made with the intention to tell an unbelievable story. The tone of the movie takes so many turns throughout that it's hard to depict what kind of movie it is. Is it a murder mystery, is it a black comedy, is it a horror movie? The development of Rosamund Pike's character is shown in a way that keeps us guessing how far she will really go, and by the end we see that she will go as far as it takes. IMO, that's what the movie is about and that's what it succeeds at. Whether or not you think the story is close to reality is really a non factor in the eyes of it's creators. I think you are over reaching like crazy I think this movie is exactly what it looks like. A "psychological thriller" that intends to rely on some type of plausibility for its effect. I don't see it attempting to be absurd or ironic. That shite would never happen IRL. Her bullshite story would get dissected and DESTROYED by detectives and the media
