2000- Michigan State: YES
2001- Duke: YES
2002- Maryland: Debatable, but they were really good. Duke was amazing but Indiana 3 point bombed them out.
2003- Syracuse: NO. Kansas and Texas were the best teams, but Rick Barnes. Arizona and Kentucky were loaded too.
2004- UConn: NO. Duke, St. Joseph's, Stanford and Kentucky were better.
2005- North Carolina: YES
2006- Florida: NO. UConn was the best team
2007- Florida: YES
2008- Kansas: YES
2009- North Carolina: Depends on who you ask. I thought UConn and Pitt were better.
2010- Duke: NO. Kansas was better
2011- UConn: NO. Ohio State was the best team
2012- Kentucky: YES
2013- Louisville: YES
2014- UConn: NO. Florida was the best team

That's 8/15 years where the best team actually won.

You do have to take into account that one team won the tournament and the teams you are arguing for did not.

That's the case for '02 Maryland (who beat the "best" team in Kansas) '03 cuse (who beat the exact 2 teams you list as better), '04 uconn, '06 Florida, and '10 duke. Those teams were all legitimate contenders before the tourney and proved their worth in the tournament giving them the rightful claim to best team. Florida might be the worst one in that group but they were really hot late and further legitimized themselves the next year.

Is a 3 seed the lowest of that group? At least Kembas uconn team was hot late, got to a 3 seed, and had possibly the best player in the tournament. Last years uconn team just sucked and is the only real outlier.

Every other team was a popular pick, elite team pre tourney.

The only fluke champs this century have been the '11/'14 UConn teams.
