I have been woodworking almost two years now and I consider myself a beginner even though we sell our stuff now. I usually do reclaimed pieces. You could start with that. I use pallets and old fence boards to make tables,benches, wine racks, signs, etc.
I few things I can't live without is:
a good sander
miter saw
brad nail gun
impact drill
A few things I am glad I have that you don't need right away:
kreg jig
jig saw
drill press
