I used to use the gas cap itself...however, recently, I went to grab the handle and a large arc of static electricity popped from my finger to the handle. there is absolutely no reason that shouldn't have ignited and burned the shite out of me...
I will never let go of a pump handle again while filling a vehicle...

You just have to ground yourself before you touch it. Touch your car door, or anything of metal on your car before grabbing the pump handle and you'll discharge whatever static electricity you built up.
