I'm really looking forward to this game but I wish SE would go back to a FFIX type game and move away from the action-rpg
That said the gameplay looks pretty damned good.

All of the development delays and changes usually doesn't bode well
Except SE is the only developer in recent memory to take one of those games and make it awesome (sleeping dogs)

I'm not sure how I feel about the action rpg yet but I also can't remember if I ever played one.

You may be surprised. The Souls series is definitely an action RPG. The Tales of series is also an action RPG.
You can really stretch to include things like Elder Scrolls, Diablo, Mass Effect, etc.

Only game I've played there is Diablo.

Maybe this game can restore my faith in ff again. Ff 13 ruined the whole series for me.

I was already put off by the online only releases (XI) and the "-2" titles (X-2)XII got a lot of shite, but it was classic final fantasy and I really enjoyed it. There's a map of XIII, the entire game and it's one straight line (which wasn't really the problem so much as that straight line was really boring) with one bloat. That was the section that was supposed to be the calm lands, but unlike the calm lands in X it wasn't full of secrets and cool shite, nor was it important to the history of the world because the surface was a huge unsettled nothing.

I know XIII gets a lot of shite but don't let it ruin the entire series for you.
They tried something different and it backfired on them. That's where Type-0 and XV are going to shine.
I enjoyed XIII FWIW, just not XIII-2 or 3.
I do think the omission of an overworld map and towns were damaging though.

It didn't ruin the series for me, but it really left the brand in a state of confusion
Final Fantasy wasn't hard to figure out - long, epic story, fantasy setting, air ships, exploration, FUN...and characters
now I'm really confused as to what final fantasy "is"
between the "-2"s and the online games, what is FF and who is it for? The only new single player game they made was nothing like final fantasy. So it's not so much that it ruined final fantasy for me, as completely made me rethink the brand. 13 reeked of a product that no one spent time on, were they too busy with the other shite? Did they even care? were they going for a mainstream audience so it was made exceptionally linear?
The fact that I'm cautious regarding an upcoming final fantasy title, or that anyone would be is a testament to the damage done by XIII.
I'm still confused, now that I know XV is a single player story, I still don't know if it's an offshoot of XIII or was planned to be.
You know what, it may have actually ruined the series, I take it back.

XV was planned to be an offshoot of XIII back 10 years ago when announced.
Once XIII got shitted on they wanted to distance from it, so they made XIII-2 and 3 to put distance from XIII while still working on XV which then became it's own game and shifted to next-gen consoles.
It changed directors from the Kingdom Hearts director, Nomura to Hajime Tabata who directed Type-0, FF7: Crisis Core and got tons of praise for it.
Actually, I'm starting to lean your way, this shite is so convoluted I'm getting tired just typing this out.
I have been and still am the biggest FF fan since the 90s.

I'm not off the wagon yet either. But I'll have to wait for the reviews...a first.
I bought X and XII and I didn't know shite about them. That's brand power.

Imagine the average consumer

Yea man, I was like...wtf am I doing? This should be easily to explain, it's just one of the best selling gaming franchises of all time.
I hate that it's so fragmented now, I think you have a good point, it's like they are doing too much at once. If they focused energy on just the numbered series, we would get a masterpiece again. That is why I think XV is going to be epic, they aren't really doing any other FF content right now. Type-0 is an old 2011 game just with a fresh coat of paint.
It's very, very violent and graphic (first FF game with an M rating) and this Tabata guy did that one as well. Hopefully this marks a shift in FF to be more mature, thus growing with it's fanbase like me over the years.
I was 11 when I got sucked into FF6, and now I'm 31, its time to mature the story and I think Type-0 and XV will do that.
But back on topic, yea, the shite is very ridiculous and confusing. I'm just very passionate about it bc the FF series is my all time favorites gaming series and I don't want it to die and leave the world to shooters and action games for AAA titles.

I always thought that Versus XIII was kinda the same universe. Not the same world. Or that they all had a similar theme of crystals, hence the Fabula Nova Crystalis title that included Agito (Type-0) and Versus (XV). Not really sure what has changed from that other than names.
Posted on 3/10/15 at 1:01 pm to Mr Gardoki
but that's what is so perplexing to me: FFXIII reeked of mass consumer appeal. are the type 0, "-2" and online games now reserved for the hardcore and the main titles scaled down for mass appeal?
Like I said, I don't understand FF anymore.
What little I read in the OP and the little I watched, it seems they've learned, but I just don't care. When it drops I'll read the review, but it is good to know that it won't be anything like XIII

They took XV (versus) out of the Fabula Nova universe when they named it XV in 2013, and made it it's own game, own story, own setting, no more part of the FNC universe.
