3 was better from a gameplay perspective. 1 was clunky as hell.

By itself, I think 1 was better in the story department. 3 has a slightly unfair advantage in that it gave me lots of feels by killing off certain characters that I had grown to love over the previous 2 games. But the god child was stupid even with the revised endings. "we have to save the universe from robots by killing everyone with even bigger robots!"
