However this plays out, next Carnival season, expect to see a LOT of arrests of teenagers at parades. There will be no more "letting it slide" or multiple warnings. No, you do something wrong and you will be gently arrested. Why?

While this spun out of control, maybe it was because the cops have let some things slide simply because it's Mardi Gras and you can't arrest everyone. In the past, the public and the police had this understanding. But every single thing up to the four punches indicated that the public (the teenagers) had crossed the line as far letting the police do their job, and verbally abusing them.

As for the incident itself, that is for the courts to decide.

But expect next year, there will be zero tolerance. Jump in front an opposing schools band next year, there will be no warning, you're going to jail. Drinking a beer under 21. Getting an MIP. Any mouthing off will result in resisting arrest.

And I can't say that I blame the police. People are focusing on the four blows, and yes, they were over the top. But that case will be settled. What bugs me is the increased lack of respect by teenagers (future adults) with police. I'm much more worried about the public-police understanding.

The kid and family will probably win, and then the question is, what then. Will others think they can mouth off against cops? I think that you will always have rogue cops, but 90% of the others are good, hard working guys who risk their life every day.

It's because of this impending lawsuit that I think we will see an entirely different Metairie Mardi Gras next year. A lot of parents better teach their kids right or they will be bailing them out of jail or paying so hefty fines. Just remember, cops could legally arrest a LOT more people at a parade than they currently do. They give out a lot of warnings to lawbreakers. Next year will be interesting.
