It's been awhile since I watched the movie. However I remember them mentioning that a lot of things had been reverse engineered from studying that ship.

One of the nitpicky things just for the sake of being nitpicky of ID 1 was how many aliens must have survived. Yeah the ships took a lot of damage and crashed... but there seemed to be a significant percentage of all those ships that didn't seem damaged. The humans would have a lot of clean-up fighting to do.

That and this. You have this advanced technology with these spaceships with shields. Yet none of them had any type of tracking ability with their weapons. No heat seeking, lock on targeting.
