I did a stint in a treatment facility as an out-patient. It was back in my partying days and I didn't feel like getting NJP'ed. Met some loose woman in that place.
They sent me to the inpatient. Took my shoelaces and everything.

Coming from someone with experience on the subject, don't make this about you. He's doing what is required of him.

Anyone have an idea or experience on how I can become a sphere of positive influence to this person?
Just be supportive. If he's already in the making amends phase of AA, he's already made a lot of progress. Offer to do non-alcohol related things with him. Aside from the initial boredom that comes with sobriety (biggest hurdle in my opinion) losing a good chunk of your social circle is probably the biggest deal. Most of your old drinking buddies will be a hindrance to to your progress--especially if most of your activities with them involved alcohol. If you can be a non-drinking friend, that would be a huge help to him. He probably already has a few from his meeting, but a familiar face can't hurt.

Why not. Just don't trip him up. As a just wrote, old friends can be a huge obstacle to sobriety--they either drag you back into drinking or get tired of your new lifestyle and stop inviting you places--which leads some to become depressed enough to relapse. If you can respect his choice, why not invite him? I've gone on vacations with strangers. You can certainly go on one with a former friend.

less than 10% of patients who go into rehab make it.

How far along is he? Every situation is obviously different but that's a bad idea. The last thing you want is for him to relapse away from home on your vacation.

I wasn't trying to use a term about international relations if that is what you are getting at. I guess my work comes out in my writing too much.

Not sure about that. Being the third wheel on a romantic getaway. At some point you two will want some alone time and it may be tempting for him to go get a drink. I of course don't know all the details.

I love the college kid mentality. You don't know jack shite about life. Some very successful people battle addiction of all forms.
