While it's true that people voluntarily make these terrible deals, it's also true that many of them have no clue about finance or interest rates and that the lender has a severe knowledge advantage.
As for student loans, Obama tried to cap the tuition at these "career colleges" to an amount equal to the first year salary (if they participate in the subsidized federal student loan program); not surprisingly the knives came out. Gotta protect U of Phoenix' corporate welfare scheme.

By law don't they have to be given the equivalent of an amortization schedule so it's all in black and white?
If so, it's not that hard to realize you are paying 4 times what the phone is worth.
