Braveheart I like, but on rewatches it gets increasingly difficult to overlook the over-the-top portrayal of William Wallace. Literally only 10% of what's in the move actually happened.

I don't know how you got the "literally only 10%" because little is known of Wallace, no paintings are known to have been done in his lifetime, and all the books written about him were done many years after his death.
Braveheart itself is based on "Blind Harry's Wallace", Henry the Minstrel, a traveling minstrel whose performances may have been based on a book written by a friend of Wallace.
Obviously this is from the Scots point of view, but Edward I "Longshanks" ruthless treatment of the Scots is well documented.
