So it's legal to carry a rifle ... but not really since you should have someone who is also carrying a weapon threaten you and ask you questions.
It's legal in most circumstances. The Id and questioning would be done to confirm that it's legal. Believe it or not, if you cooperate, answer questions and provide id, you are not going to be threatened and will likely be on your way in less than a minute.
Let me ask you a question, how do you feel about voter id laws? I have a feeling I know what your answer will be considering you have answered most questions in this thread with the answer that most supports your position, no matter how asinine.

Good lawd, we are now comparing voter id's to cops saying papers please for legally carrying a weapon!

How is questioning you and asking for Id a threat?

I tried to read all of the posts but found it way too painful. I'm 62 years old and I grew up in a time when people could walk out in their yard or down the street with a gun without anyone thinking anything of it. A rifle in a rack in the back window of a pickup was considered a standard option and may as well have been a windshield wiper it got so little notice. But times have changed. People weren't shooting up movie theaters and high schools back then. I realize that in some people's minds our LEOs have made a bad name for the whole group. I get all of that. But I have one question for all the people defending THIS GUY'S actions. What would you do if you heard a knock at the door, and when you looked through the peep hole you saw a guy in a KILT with an AR on his shoulder. I have grand children living in my home and I know with great certainty what I would do. The first thing I would do is arm myself, and the second thing I would do is call the cops. I would not answer the door assuming he's just a normal guy exercising his legal right to open carry! If you say you would, then you are either a liar or a fool. Take your pick! So in essence I would be asking the police to do what you say is illegal. And I would bet a paycheck that all of you that are defending this guy would do the same thing. Unless you're a total moron!

You said
Probable cause is not required to detain someone.
And if you think in this day and age a reasonable officer getting 911 calls about some whack job walking around in a skirt with an AR 15 in downtown Houston isn't worthy of a stop I can't help you.
Guy needs to be locked up . He's a ticking timebomb.

3. Detaining someone when there is no probable cause a crime has been committed is ILLEGAL.

Apparently people on this board think IDing someone then leaving is going to foil a plot to commit mass murder.

How do you feel about voter ID laws? Judging by your response I bet you support them. I do as well. I see the value in a slight impingement on freedom as long as it acts to protect from greater potential harms.
How is asking a voter for their ID to make sure that 1. They can legally vote and 2. They are not commuting voter fraud any different than asking for a person carrying a rifle for their ID to make sure they can legally carry the rifle?

Walking around in a kilt with a rifle. It's weird, and it's something a crazy person might do.

I know you don't have the first clue about the difference between a terry stop and an arrest.
I know this guy was scaring the shite out of people walking around downtown in a skirt with an AR 15 in broad daylight mumbling shite about the Magna Carta and King Joffrey.
You gonna refute any of that?
And I damn well know if I had been there I'da tailed him with my Concealed carry and plugged his arse first time I saw him wave it anybody and a Houston Jury would a walked me ( if it ever got that far).

Never said that. But considering that submitting to an ID request and not being a felon is typically required by law in order to open carry, I don't see why a person should be hostile and argumentative to a cop who is doing his job and making sure you have a right to carry the gun. And it won't always stop a mass murderer, but if the guy is acting crazy and mumbling shite about killing his chemistry professor, at least the cop has a chance to stop something awful from happening.

Righttttt.....you know he was released and not charged with anything?
In the United States, a "Terry stop" is a brief detention of a person by police on reasonable suspicion of involvement in criminal activity but short of probable cause to arrest.
