Actually some colleges have planes and you can major in aviation pilot. I know North Dakota State and I think one in Florida as well.
It's really hard to fly in the military. The big thing when I was in PS was to go to India and fly there for a start up airliner. They were hiring ATP pilots with relatively low hours. You go there for a few years then try to find a job in the states or Europe.

That's where my buddies went. Florida Institute of Technology is what it was called. Flew to visit me in BR a lot just to get hours in. Name of the school may have changed.
