In my 25 years of teaching I never weighted grades.
Each assignment was worth a certain number of points depending on big or small the assignment was. Grade= total points made vs possible

Not at my son's high school. Some teachers weight and others don't. Many quizzes are equal to a test which is equal to homework. I'm not a teacher but to me a quiz or homework shouldn't be equal (and ISN'T equal) to a test.

No, assigning different point values for different assignments in not weighting. Weighting is giving different categories of assignments different percentages of the final grade. Total points=/= weighting
