Is this a peek at the HTC One M9 (aka Megatron)?

There was a render leaked a couple of days ago but it looked exactly like the One M8 but with the new camera on the back.
This on the other hand looks a tad more official from Spigen's (they make phone cases) website. Saved it to imgur in case it gets taken down. Spiegen HTC One M9 case

Hence, the M9 is rumored to come with an edge to edge glass panel on its front. The speaker panels will no longer be exposed like they were in the original One and the One (M8). Rather, they will be enclosed within the aforementioned glass. This will get two 45 degree cutouts for the slit speaker grills, which will span around 50% of the handset's top and bottom edges.
And this will apparently make the One (M9)'s design closely resemble that of the Nexus 9. According to the source of the information, the new style will enable a "slicker" and "more refined" look on the new flagship smartphone when compared to its predecessors.

Everything I've seen so far indicates that it will look like version in your second pic.
Either way, It can't get here soon enough.

This phone will be incredible. Will be trading in my M8 for the M9 once it hits the stores.

peek*
I thought this was going to be like a 7" phablet and you were asking if this was peak phablet.

that's what I was thinking also until commenters on The Verge started dissecting the pics and saying that they're fake

Looks like some are now saying the first leaked pics were dummies that were delivered to case manufacturers because HTC was expecting leaks.

I really hope it is this design that you alluded to in the OP. Much better than the M8 clone I was seeing. I still have my M7, which I got a couple weeks after it was first introduced (yes, I have one that has the camera defect). I'm planning on getting the M9, so I can't wait to see what the unveil this Sunday.

The first leaked images of what we thought was the HTC One M9 appeared courtesy of nowherelse.fr. These pictures revealed a device which looked very similar to the HTC One (M8), leaving some commentators disappointed. However, it was quickly discovered that HTC had delivered a "dummy" model of the Hima to case manufacturers expecting that it would be leaked.
An out-of-retirement Evan Blass (@evleaks) then took to Twitter with a lineup of the previous HTC One M9 / Hima suspects, along with what we thought might be the real deal. Check out the picture below.

Based on the videos, it looks exactly like my M8. The features look the same too...

Whats going to be the better phone, Galaxy S6 or M9?

The side by side comparison of the two phones with the info they have has the HTC edging out. That's why I am leaning towards this one.

wish the m9 had been out a couple days ago when my 4s crapped out on me and I had to get a new phone on a 2 year plan.
ended up getting the m8 and love it, but the m9 is about to come out :(

pretty sure you have 30 days to "try out" a phone. You should be able to return it for the M9

Always a good idea to keep your old phone sitting around just in case. It has saved me a few times being able to just charge and pop in the sim.

yea but my 4s won't even turn on and freezes in recovery mode. Still have it but it's useless. Bet there's a way to get the data off of it, I just don't know it.
If I hadn't backed up my contacts to my gmail account I would of been truly fricked. Never set up icloud.

I have the M8 and really like it, but if HTC releases something like render #2 and has that big arse bezel around the screen and the HTC taking up real estate on the bottom, they're going to be in trouble.

I'm not sure about Verizon's try-out period, but I'm pretty sure you only have 14 days when signing a new contract. Did you get it subsidized, or did you sign up for their monthly payment plan?
I would look on CL or somewhere and get a cheap phone to hold you over until the M9 comes out.
