The Large Hadron Collider at CERN being built and turned on for the first time is quite significant as well. From some people terrified it would create a black hole and swallow the Earth, to them actually discovering a new particle...it is quite an insane, mind-blowing piece of technology. It is still in its infancy and who knows what the hell else we will learn from that thing.
