The Myth that LSU Cannot Develop QBs
no one is worried about the 3 or 4 coaches that Ole Miss has had in that span and how they developed QBs.
We know for sure that Les Miles cannot...period...save Mett who well, was developed as much as he was going to be when he got here.
Yeah I guess Russell and Flynn, respectively, setting all those records and leading the SEC in passing in '06 and '07, like, just never happened.

I love your graphs, but 2009 should probably get an asterisk for Lee. Can't really get any significant results when he only threw 40 passes on the whole year.

Quick...someone name a QB Miles recruited from high school who developed into a competent SEC QB. can't be done. There hasn't been one in Miles 10 years on the job. That's unacceptable. Until that happens, its not a myth that LSU can't develop QBs. Every QB fully groomed under Miles and co. has been a total bust. The best QBs under Miles (Russell, Flynn and Mett) got their beginnings under different tutelage. I don't think its any coincidence that those guys were the best during Miles tenure.

Russell, Flynn and Perrilloux would have been...
Mettenberger was developed by Miles and Cameron.
It's not Miles fault Mettenberger didn't come to LSU straight from high school...

Fine RP was a bust under his own doings but its still a knock on Miles track record. It still means he hasn't recruited and developed a high school quarterback. Until he does that, I'm not going to discount the years under different coaches before Mett came to LSU

2005-07 - Miles did not recruit these QBs, therefore these 3 years are excluded from the 10 years of Miles's tenure.
2012-13 - Miles did not recruit Mett out of high school, therefore these 2 years are excluded from the 10 years of Miles's tenure.
2008-2009; 2014 - The QBs playing in these years were second-year players but starting for the first time, and did not have adequate time to develop.
2011 - Both LSU QBs were at the top of the SEC in passing efficiency.
So in the remaining 1 year, Miles failed to develop a QB he recruited from high school into a competent SEC QB.

that's quite the effort to let him off the hook for his poor QB development. Especially given the fact that his poor QB development has likely cost LSU championships. I'm not sure how any LSU fan can accept the mediocrity at a key position year after year. Power school, power conference, talent rich state. It shouldn't happen.

It's really not that difficult. Using your chosen criteria, half of Miles's tenure is automatically disqualified.

In 2011 SEC regular season games, Jefferson and Lee had higher QB ratings than any other starting SEC QB. They were also the top two in the SEC for YPA. They were #2 and #3 in the SEC for Comp%.

Am I? Jefferson, Lee and Jennings are good quarterbacks in your world huh?
In 2011, LSUs QBs averaged 12/20 for a whopping 153 yards per game. That's not good production no matter how much Sunshine you want to pump.
Compared to the weak standard of during the Miles tenure I guess getting excited over a 62% completion percentage is something. But touting 2011 as one of the best years for Miles QBs isn't exactly a ringing endorsement.

i didn't read this entire thread but i can guess how it has gone.
but it is not Miles' job to develop QBs. thats what a QB coach is for.

Tell me, how has that talent-rich state done in the last 10 years with producing QBs?

You forgot 21 TDs and 5 INTs.

Les Miles is a top coach , LSU fans on these boards tend to stink up up the place !

You've swayed me. Les Miles is obviously the QB whisperer. An offensive guru.

You said neither of them was a "competent SEC QB," and each of them was a "total bust." Now you want to argue over whether they were good. You must already know your argument is full of shite.
Yes, Lee and Jefferson were good QBs in 2011. They were better than any other starting SEC QBs. Jefferson was selected to attend the NFL combine where he performed exceptionally well. Although Jefferson had the lowest grade prior to the 2012 NFL Combine, Jefferson was the only QB to finish among the top five QBs in each event. Among the quarterbacks, Jefferson finished first in the 20 yard shuttle, tied for first in the bench press, and finished third in the 40 yard dash and the vertical jump.
Lee was selected to play in two All-Star bowls, and he played with the San Diego Chargers through the 2012 preseason.
quote:It's not great production. Still puts them at #5 in the SEC. Sounds good to me. More than just a "competent SEC QB" and certainly not "total busts."
