Is this s.o.p. at the average bank?
Yes it is and I'm guessing you were at a Wells Fargo.

Bingo. Do you work for that institution?

Nah, 800k just isn't terribly large to anybody on the OT.
Which is why I felt comfortable presenting the matter to this forum.

Of course they are going to try to get you to invest with then when you deposit a check like that, it's their job.

I bank at Wells. This is SOP.

Yes, but another part. However I'm pretty familiar with WF's sales practices in the stores.
On one hand, depositing a check like that can give you a few benefits in terms of your total relationship with the bank, so its a good thing they are willing to talk to you and didn't just deposit it as if it were a $15 check. You'd be surprised at the idiots who go in to deposit large checks and just leave it sitting in a checking account where it doesn't earn them a single cent or get them a discount on other things like their mortgage or car loan. Also, if you walk into any bank with a six figure check, flags will be raised either good (sales potential) or bad (fraud).
On the other hand, in some branches it can be really annoying when they can swarm on you and not let go because they only see sales potential that can help them hit their daily goal. You just want to deposit a check, not swat away sales people.

Indeed.
In any event, I successfully fended off their efforts to "help" me, although now I suppose, I'll receive a barrage of direct mail on their investment services.

An ad writer on the OT no less. Everybody knows ad writers take home about 30 mil annually.

At the risk of sounding immodest, I am rather good at what I do.

Hmmm.
I've been in banking for 20 years and these statements are what you call "red flags"

If you're referring to structuring, these sharks could be the least of your worries.

In my circles, we simply call it a "business model."
