He's miserable because his wife died. Give him a good year to get over that (the first year after a loved one's death is the hardest because you go through all the "firsts"... first Christmas, first birthday, etc. without them).
Once the first year is up, have the granddaughter work him over.

I used to believe that if an old person states they want to stay in their home then you should bugger off.. My tone has changed watching grandparents/others wither into nothing while living out their days in home while others have stubbornly moved and been thankful only a short time later.. My conclusion, never force but definitely push
