I see what they new way is doing...
We all do mental math in our head by some method or another than we have concocted in our head over the years. (well at least the people that are good at math).
This is just a way of showing some of those methods on paper. It seems confusing on paper, especially when it is explained retardedly, but the concept is similar to what we do in our heads.

When I first saw these "new" ways they were teaching kids, I thought, "That's exactly how I do it in my head." Makes sense to teach it that way. I wasn't, but I think it eventually becomes very logical for most people to do arithmetic this way.
