Good luck with that. It's typically a lifelong, high maintenance operation. Players like Tommy Emmanuel and Steve Howe don't do it; they use flesh, though I expect their picking fingers are decently callused. Tommy does use a thumb pick.

Haha...that was interesting.
I tried using a thumb pick when I took up the steel guitar a while back and didn't like it. I like to be able to feel the strings. They make finger picks that have holes in them so that your fingers actually touch the strings through the holes. That may end up being a partial solution but no such thing is available for the thumb as far as I know.
