So is it just saber rattling? Honestly I don't think strategically we could sustain a war with Russia. Russia would also bring China and Iran into the fold I would imagine.

Other than China possibly taking advantage of the US being tied up in Europe to strike in order to finally take full control of the much contested Yellow Sea, I don't think there is a real chance of China forming an alliance with Russia similar to what was seen between Japan & Germany in WWII. More than likely China would remain on the sidelines and actually try to broker peace. China's whole economic foundation is built on cargo ships leaving China and oil tankers coming to China. If war came, the US Navy would lock down Chinese waters and cut China off from everything they need. Their goods could not be brought to market and the oil would not be able to reach their ports. In short, war for China would be very bad for business.

As for Iran, they're more suited for what they're doing now, allowing proxy terrorist organizations do their dirty work with insurrection type operations. As for Iran taking part in a conventional war against the US, they're woefully unprepared for such an endeavor.

I could see them potentially trying to make one last push to get us out of being a dominate world power. Is it likely? No, but it seems like Putin has started pounding the war drum pretty hard lately:

Of all the things that could lead to a war between NATO and Russia, this is the thing most likely to trigger it.
