From your link:

" Once they do that, that ball has met the requirements, and they put them in a bag, and they stay in that room with them, that locker room, until they leave to go to the field about 10 minutes before kickoff.

So there’s a 10-minute window where they hand those footballs off to the ballboys, and the ballboys then walk out with the officials and bring them out on the field. So that’s where the confusion is. Where did any of this occur? "

Those statements by Daopoulos indicate that the refs screwed up and didn't follow protocol. If they were in that room with the balls until they handed the balls off to the ballboy, and the ballboy, per protocol, was supposed to walk out onto the field WITH THE OFFICIALS, then the refs are the ones who need to explain how the ballboy was by himself in possession of the balls. If the ballboy said I have to stop to take a leak, the refs would break their own protocol by saying okay, see ya out on the field then, no problem. And even in that scenario, how would the ballboy know in advance that one of the refs wouldn't say okay, I'll hold the ball bags while you hit the head?

That interview raises more issues than it answers.

then walk out with the officials
He makes it clear the balls should never be in anyone's hands outside the officials view after inspection. That is very clear
