I like Jack and have enjoyed many, many of his movies but how often does he stray from the Nicholson persona? He's a great movie star, DDL is a great actor.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Chinatown, The Departed, The Shining, A Few Good Men. Off the top of my head, I'd say those are Jack's best performances; and each of those roles is completely different.

Chinatown and The Departed are very slight variations. The others are identical. But he plays his one note very well.

This is a pretty good list - and while they're different, they're still Jack, too. His off-screen persona is alike another character he plays.

Again, I think Jack is a victim of his own success - much the same way Hanks' great performances are sandwiched by the "real" Tom Hanks and the relatively unsophisticated nature of his early work (Bosom Buddies, Bachelor Party, Splash) - people forget he's a helluva good actor - that run from Philadelphia to Castaway rivals almost any 7 year period for any actor - and I mean, Grant, Stewart, Bogey, Tracy, Jack, Duvall, Brando, DDL - anybody.

But, I digress.

His performances in the departed, the shining, and ofotcn were pretty similar.
