Extreme shifts go back to the 1920s. St. Louis used a shift against Ted Williams in the '46 World Series.
People can blame the shift all they want for decreasing excitement in the game, but at the end of the day, it's a risk/reward defense.
All a guy has to do is hit it the other way and its a guaranteed hit.

You literally just need to bunt away from the shift and you can walk to first
