The biggest snub in Oscar history was without a doubt Brokeback Mountain losing to Crash.
Brokeback Mountain was the most awarded film in Oscar history going into the ceremony. It had won virtually all of the critic awards. It had also won the Golden Globe, the PGA, the DGA, the WGA, and many other guild awards.
It was the frontrunner of frontrunners. No one thought it could be beaten. Absolutely no one. The only reason why Crash was being given a prayer's chance was because it won the SAG for Best Ensemble. Even then it was considered a distant second to Brokeback Mountain.
While Shakespeare in Love beating Saving Private Ryan was considered a big upset, people still saw it as a threat to win. No one saw anything other than Brokeback Mountain winning that night.
