Report back after experiencing Mardi Gras on the traditional Uptown route on Sunday before Mardi Gras Day (Okeanos/Mid City/Thoth/Bacchus) and Endymion on the Mid City route on Saturday or in the Dome for the Extravaganza.

Also, if you get a chance to ride in either Endymion or one of the bigger uptown parades (I will be riding in Thoth for my third time this year), do it. It may change your whole perspective on Mardi Gras.

Your current view on Mardi Gras (assuming you have only experienced Lafayette's watered down version) is like saying you don't get the appeal of the Eiffel Tower after only seeing the model version in Las Vegas.
