LSU needs a steady game - manager QB that can make good throws when needed.
That's not asking much

YAYYYYY...another thread about Les Miles and the QB situation

It's not that Miles hasn't recruited good QB's it's just the fact he can't develop any. He's had good OC's but he won't let them do their job the way they want. He knows very little about offense and his time at LSU proves it.

Some LSU fans just look at the very few schools that have unusually sustained success with landing/developing QB and think that's the norm. It's not.
It is the norm when you have a talented development staff, and understand what you want to do on offense. Ie. Patterson, Briles, Harbaugh, Leach etc. How many of there usually (FAR LESS TALNTED, and not highly ranked coming out of HS) go on to start, play well early and usually have multi-year illustrious careers?
Please don't blame this on the fact that LSU hasn't brought in talent at the QB position. And, don't think that this issue doesn't have a ton to do with what talent we haven't brought in.

Except QB???? What the hell? We have serious issues almost every damn year.
Last two qbs from LA to get drafted. Stefan Lefors, and Eli Manning. Neither came to LSU and both were before Miles.
Louisiana, besides rp, hasn't produce a qb good enough. Most of the good qbs from LA are playing wr or db in the NFL, one is going to be drafted as a rb this year.
Obviously HS football in LA is just diff. Even though we produce the most players per capita, it doesn't really tell the whole story. Let's say you get 3 wrs from LA drafted, well that's great and all, but that's not what's going to win you championships. same when 4 dB's from LA get drafted in one class. those are good numbers for the size of LA, but you can not win on LA talent alone.

Patterson should have started boykin ever since the LSU loss and didn't. He mismanaged his qb position.

Here is your list of the illustrious QBs Les Miles has signed in 10 full recruiting seasons.
2014 Brandon Harris
2013 Hayden Rettig, Anthony Jennings
2012 Jeremy Liggins
2011 Zach Mettenberger, Stephen Rivers, Jarrard Randall
2010 Zach Lee
2009 Chris Garrett, Russell Shepard
2008 Jordan Jefferson
2007 Jarrett Lee
2006 n/a
2005 Ryan Perrilloux
Of that list (setting aside Brandon Harris as it’s so early in his career), there are only two that were/are even close to NFL QB talent, and when I mean close, I mean, can you even get invited to the Combine? IN TEN FREAKING YEARS. TEN YEARS of a program that supposedly is in the top 10 nationally as a program. Only the BOLDED ones have made it on the field for more than a two game span.
The answer is here if you look for it.

Does it really matter? Bama has proven that you can win in college football with sub-par non-NFL QB's. Just sayin.
You're joking right? Biggest difference is Winning. And ofcourse that Bama used 3 qb's in 10 years...

FIFY - Bama has used 6 QB's in the last 10 years, but whose counting.

My reason for the thread is that I am tired of hearing pumpers act like Miles hasn't created the QB situation that he is in
Misery- his words
And I am sorry I have this gravitational ability to force you to open this thread. Too bad I can't use this talent to help Les develop a QB.

I agree with a lot of stuff you said, but this is silly. For the record it doesn't matter if you have a good QB, you are not going to have many "NFL talents" in 10 years
Let's review some of the team QBs in the SEC over that span. I have no idea how many of these guys went to the combine, but 2 in a 10 year span is average. Also, you can't count Harris out yet.
LSU -
Russell
Flynn
Mett
(Perriloux would have, but yeaaaaah)
Bama 10 years - (Saban 8 years)
Wilson (meh kinda)
McElroy
McCarron
Auburn -
Todd
Newton
Arkansas -
Mallet
Wilson
MSU -
Russell
Prescott
Ole Miss -
Snead
Wallace
TAMU -
McGee (meh kinda)
Johnson
Tannehill
Manziel
USCe -
Garcia
Shaw
Thompson
UF -
Leak
Tebow
UGA -
Shockley
Stafford
Cox (meh, kinda, sorta)
Murray
Mason
Tennessee -
Ainge
Crompton
Bray
UK -
Woodson
Hartline
Mizzu -
Daniels
Gabbert
Franklin
Vandy -
Cutler
Les Miles QBs also own like 5 of LSU's top 10-11 passing seasons.
IMO, they strike gold with Harris who will be here for three more years.

If the coach's philosophy doesn't agree that the QB's role is to push the ball down the field with his arm and make plays, but instead to 'manage the game' and 'don't make mistakes', you get what we have here. If Your eyes are telling you what to believe, then believe it.

Leach's QBs were never great. They were just air raid, throw on every down, dink and donk, system QBs. Briles has something going but Patterson has been at TCU since 2002 and his only QBs of note are Dalton, Pachall 1 year, and Boykin 1 year.
JJ was better than all but three of Patterson's QBs at TCU (I'd say tie with Ballard). Harbaugh had the very talented Luck, and that was it. There is nothing else to go on with him.
I wish you had looked around instead of spouting off names like you knew what the hell you were talking about.

I agree with the OP. Everywhere else Les has done well with recruiting...yes you can argue OL and LB, but that is it and very few universities have done much better at those two. QB is LSU weakness. Hopefully Harris will make a difference next year, not saying AJ cannot get better, but I don't feel by much. I'd be happy, if I'm wrong.

our results are probably about average to above average relative to the rest of college football
so to make yourself feel better, you're now comparing us to the rest of college football?
We're an elite program. I don't care how we compare to the rest of the country, I care about how we compare to the 15 or so very good programs that typically are in the mix championships. Are more specifically, how we compare to the teams in our conference.

Hey Dummy! Numbers never lie. Check the QB production of any of those guys, and while you're at it, check the passing record books on them.
The point you missed was that one of those guys can take far less talented guys and make them super successful at their position because of how they're coached and developed. They all know what they want to do on offense, and when they're clicking, there is not much a defense can do when facing a great passing attack. Not saying we need to go air raid, but can you imagine what kind of success on offense we could see with a true commitment to a passing game. The balance with this running game would be lethal. We've seen glimpses in the past with 2011 season, and with Cam/Mett last year.

Thanks genius, I stand corrected. Bama has had just as much ineptness at QB as we have. I was crazy to think that they had stability at QB for the last decade..

1. its not on Jennings that Quinn dropped balls with the game on the line that would have kept drives alive. LSU 13-10 over Bama. Win over Bama, whole team is energized. Not sure about the play calling in the Miss State loss in which LSU has the ball on the 1 and does not give it to a HUGE back. Win those two, and you are playing for the SEC championship as co-champs of the SEC west, 10-2. SEC champs, again. So, in the two close losses, it was not all on the QB. Not in my eyes. 2. Perilloux returning and playing in the national champ game vs Bama instead of JJ, maybe another national championship. Not only that, with RP, LSU beats Bama in regular time, and Ok State gets to play LSU for the natty.
Really good post and I can't disagree with your opinion, but IF a frog had wings, he wouldn't bust his a$$ a hopping...
