If someone put a gun to my head and said I HAD to go to Mexico (pun intended), I'd opt for Cozumel and never leave the island.

Just got back from the Yucatan, 3 nights in Playa then drove 4 hours south almost to Belize and stayed another 4 nights. I never felt uncomfortable. I felt safer there than at the mall in Baton Rouge...

I was there last year and felt safe. Just don't be a dumb tourist. Don't wear flashy stuff to make yourself an easy target. Tell the woman to leave the nice jewelry at home. Be aware of your environment at all times. Don't go walking the streets late at night. Basic common sense type stuff.
