I hear what you are saying but the issue for me is "Can the players get a feel for their Coach, during the game, when "he" is up in the box"

I say no and sometimes when things are really difficult and challenging, I need a leader who leads from the front, then I am willing to do whatever it takes to follow him into battle.

That's why you have O IF Steele goes to the booth. Best of both worlds. Ed firing the troops up while Steele calls the shots.

I have zero doubt Ed will be involved with the entire defensive unit, somewhat of an assistant DC. He'll coach DL but be involved with the entire defense even if his title doesn't reflect it. His personality is too contagious for it not to happen.
