I used to live in guanacaste (Nosara). The NW coast is nice, and they should go there if they decide on costa rica, but the rainforest is further south. I'd go to more than one place, if it was my first time.

My tentative plans are exactly this....fly into San Jose, stay 1 night, maybe head to the volcano region in the NW.....stay about 2 nights...then head to the coast in Guanacaste area....then fly home from there....
Also, if we would go to Napa, then we would bounce around SF, Napa, and other sites as well....
