I knew the cheapest way was solid fuel. I like your design for leaving Kerbin's orbit.

The trick to solid fuel is to throttle it back in the VAB so you don't waste the energy to atmospheric drag by going full thrust from the start.
Sometimes it's handy to get that quick burst and dump them, but many times its inefficient.
I tried to get a Kerbal in a seat just for the hell of it.....it required an elaborate contraption of basically a capsule radially attached that he came out of with a drone core that was ejected off the rocket.
If you exclude the parts ejected before launch it actually comes out to be about 170 cheaper than the prior design (seat is like 250 cheaper than the drone core + 80 for a battery pack).
But mid way through I just got fed up and abandoned the project mid filming.
But I'm proud of my lander too.
We going for Wal mart cheap landers here!
Ain't nobody got money for fancy pansy luxuries like lander legs!
